Atlanta Ballet’s “The Sleeping Beauty” is a story of revival, where love defeats evil. It seems to come at an important juncture. As in the Charles Perrault’s fairytale on which Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 1890 ballet was grounded, where hope and love conquer vindictiveness and fear, artistic ideals excel recession fears as the company pushes itself firmly toward prosperity. Inside all the history, Kristine Necessary Loveless, a young star, danced the part of Princess Aurora, the final principal role along with the troupe that she joined 9 years ago. It is a little gloomy that she is planing to retire, being 28 years old, at the end of the season. The Prologues’ Pas de Six — 6 fairies that bestow virtues on the princess — displayed the unrivalled gifts of 6 dancers, particularly soft port de bras plus steady pointe work of Ann Tyler Harshbarger and sparkling skitters en pointe of Peng-Yu Chen to a fast flute melody. In addition, standing out from all them was Abigail Tan in the role of the generous Lilac Fairy, whose gracious, long, sustained lines united the quality of charity and who conquered the most difficult of the steps with sliding ease. Contradiction that with Tara Lee, whose Carabosse frustrated the royal court’s grace and goodness. Entering on a stroke of lightning with her bizarre, masked vampires, she swirled around the stage with a baby in her arms placing the oath. It's awesome!
